Yard-O-Led is proud to reintroduce the Deco 34 — a faithful recreation of a rare archival model first produced in 1930. This limited edition pencil has been painstakingly remade in tribute to a remarkable story of courage and survival: the pencil that saved Lt. Leslie March’s life in 1942. During his service in WWII, Lt. March carried a Yard-O-Led pencil — a gift from his wife, Margaret. In a moment that would become legend in his family, the pencil stopped a bullet during combat, sparing his life. From that day on, it never left his side, serving as his “lucky charm” through the fierce trials of war. Tragically, Lt. March was later killed in action in Normandy in 1944 at just 23 years old. His pencil was preserved as a treasured heirloom by his family until it was donated to the Yard-O-Led museum by his stepbrother, Mr. Kelly, who remembers Leslie simply and movingly as: “my hero.” To honour his memory, Yard-O-Led has brought the Deco 34 back to life. Every detail — from its distinctive square barrel and intricate hand-engraved pattern, to the unique ball clip — mirrors the elegance of the original. As the tooling for the Deco 34 no longer existed, our craftspeople in Birmingham remade everything from scratch, staying true to the traditional methods and original machinery that once shaped the very pencil Lt. March carried. Each pencil is individually handcrafted and made to order. A premium leather holder is included. A portion of the proceeds from each Lucky Pencil will be donated to the Royal Marines Charity, supporting the brave men and women of the Royal Marines and their families. This is more than a writing instrument — it is a story of survival, remembrance, and British craftsmanship at its finest.
