Erbario - Bookaneer Notebook
About the inspiring book
Erbario, by unknown author(s) (Veneto, 15th century).
This amazing herbal manuscript from northern Italy contains various illustration styles, evidence of additions made to the original text throughout generations.
It started its life in the early 15th century as a set of around seventy wonderful paintings of plants with human faces and other fantastical elements, following medieval conventions. Sometime later the bound manuscript was interleaved with a set of more naturalistic images, perhaps painted directly from specimens, or at least very good drawings.
Around a quarter of the illustrations have notes on medicinal properties and preparations of the plants, mostly in Italian, and occasionally in Latin or a mix of both languages. This suggests the text was mostly written in the Veneto.
