About the inspiring book
Il Dittionario, by Ambrogio Calepino (Vinegia, 1552).
Ambrogio Calepino (Castelli Calepio, 1440) became an Augustinian monk at an early age. Inspired by the classics and the work of prominent humanists, the Italian scholar devoted his entire life to the making of the Dictionarium Latinum, that could be better described as an encyclopedia, with many historical and cultural digressions.
The Dictionarium was first published in Reggio Emilia in 1502 with great success. Calepino constantly completed and amended the text until his death in 1510 and a revised edition was published in Venice in 1520, thanks to Calepino’s brothers of the convent of St. Augustine of Bergamo. The Italian translation was published in Venice in 1552, edited by Lucio Minerbi and printed by A San Luca al segno del Diamante.
The Dictionarium, universally known as the Calepino, had a wide dissemination in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, with more than 200 editions, including the most popular heptalingual editions in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, French, Italian, Spanish and German.
