About the inspiring book
How to Mix Drinks or The Bon-Vivant\'s Companion, by Jerry Thomas (NY, 1862).
Legendary bartender Jerry Thomas (1830-1885) compiled this seminal volume in 1862, becoming the first drink book ever published in America. The guide declares the principles for formulating mixed drinks of all categories (eighty-six different kinds of punches, together with a universe of cobblers, fizzes, and sours) and classifies what was then an oral tradition of recipes from the early days of cocktails, including some of his own creations.
Thomas popularised inventive drinks and elevated the practice of bartending to an art form. At the height of his popularity in the 19th century, people all over the country were eager to taste Thomas\' recipes: the Mint Julep, the Locomotive, the Fix, the Flip, and many more, including his signature cocktail, the Blue Blazer, which involves pouring flaming whiskey between two glasses to create a dramatic pyrotechnic display.
While Abraham Lincoln was still in the White House, Jerry Thomas laid the foundations for today\'s cocktail renaissance.
